Overseas Volunteers

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Moving into mission is not a decision to take lightly, which is why we've answered a few common questions below to help make your process a little easier.
  1. How long do I have to commit to?
  2. Do I need to know the language of the country I am applying for?
  3. How much would I need to raise to cover my living expenses?

1. How long do I have to commit to?

This would depend on which position you are applying for but generally if it is a leadership role then we would want a minimum commitment of 12 months, ideally 2-3 years. For a non-leadership position you could commit to as little as 6 months.

2. Do I need to know the language of the country I am applying for?

Although it would be an advantage, it is not a requirement. All volunteers will be given informal on the job language training.

3. How much would I need to raise to cover my living expenses?

Because we strive to make all donated funds have the largest impact on the children in our programs, we ask all volunteers to raise their own support so that they can cover their own living expenses while volunteering overseas. Don’t worry; unlike western nations, the cost of living is substantially lower. The largest expense is your airfare, ranging from approximately $1000 to $2300 depending on which country you choose to serve in. Long term volunteers (6+ month commitment) who fill a full time position are eligible for accommodation, utilities and a small food allowance.

We highly recommend you purchase some type of health insurance policy to cover any expenses you might accrue if you were to get ill while living abroad. This is something you would need to inquire about, as the cost varies depending on what level of coverage you decide upon.

In each country you will also be required to obtain a visa, which averages about $200 per year depending on the nation. Our national staff can help you with the paperwork that’s required when applying for your visas.

Depending on which country you live in, you may need to purchase a scooter or bicycle for transportation, as well. As a guide, we recommend each volunteer have a minimum of $200 per month support, plus, the cost of airfares in place before moving overseas.
