How long do I have to commit to?
This would depend on which position you are applying for, but generally
if it is a leadership role
then we would want a minimum commitment of 12 months, ideally 2-3 years.
For a nonleadership
position you could commit to as little as 3 months.
What qualifications do I need?
Other than nursing and counselling where formal training is essential,
other positions can
generally be filled by those with a passion in that given area; however
preference would be
given to those with experience in the given field. Each volunteer will
be given help and
guidance from other field workers until they feel comfortable in the
role they are in. Although
each volunteer will have set tasks and goals to achieve, it is expected
that most positions will
overlap in many areas as we work largely on a team basis rather than
just individually.
Do I need to know the language of the country I am applying for?
Although it would be an advantage, it is not a requirement. All volunteers
will be given informal
on the job language training.
How much would I need to raise to cover my living expenses?
As we always try to make funds donated have the biggest effect on the
children in our
programs, we ask all volunteers to raise their own support so they
can cover their living
expenses while volunteering overseas. However, unlike in western
nations, the cost of living is
substantially lower.
The largest expense is your airfares, ranging from approximately $1000 to $2300 depending on which country you choose to serve in. Assuming you live in one of the children’s homes, you wouldn’t be required to cover any rent or utilities, but we do request a $50 - $80 per month (depending on which nation you will be volunteering in) donation towards food. If you chose to live outside the children’s home then these costs could rise substantially.
We also recommend you take out health insurance to cover you if you got ill while outside your home nation. This is something you would need to enquire about as the cost varies depending on what level of cover you decide upon. In each country you will require to obtain a visa, these average around $200 per year, depending on which nation. Our national staff can help you with whatever paperwork is required to apply for visas. As a rough guide we recommend each volunteer have a minimum of $250 per month support plus the cost of airfares in place before they move overseas. Assistance can be given to all volunteers on ways to gain personal support and other fundraising ideas.
