The need
India gained independence from British rule in 1947. Since this time, India has seen its share of violence arising from religious clashes, terrorism and territorial disputes. India is now one of the fastest growing economies in the world, however, many of it's people still live in harsh poverty.
In 2004 the catastrophic tsunami that decimated coastlines throughout South East Asia, also hit India with great force. The surging waves killed more than 15 000 people along the South East Coast of India, and left countless homeless and without a source of income.
- 47% of Indian children are malnourished. A third of the worlds undernourished children are from India (UNICEF).
- It is estimated that 42 million Indian children between the ages of 6-10 do not go to school. Of the children that do attend school, 1/3 do not complete primary school (UNICEF).
- As of 2006, it was estimated that 2.5 million people in India have HIV/AIDS (UNICEF).
What we do
Destiny Rescue undertakes a variety of projects in India.
Child Sponsorship - Children are sponsored from numerous locations in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Child sponsorship ensures that children receive an education, food and healthcare, as well as family support to break the cycle of poverty and become self sufficient.
Children’s Homes – Children’s homes have been established to provide orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children with a place of care. The children within the homes receive an education, healthcare and love from the resident house parents. Despite their pasts, these children now have a bright future.
Emergency Aid Relief – In times of great need, emergency aid relief is given. After a recent cyclone caused much destruction, Destiny Rescue was able to rebuild homes for vulnerable families.
Tsunami victim support - Coastal communities within the state of Andhra Pradesh were badly affected by the 2004 tsunami that wreaked havoc across Asia. Destiny Rescue supports families and children in one particular village, where many of the men were fishermen and lost their nets and equipment to the waves. They struggled to provide for their families and many went without food and necessities. Destiny Rescue has provided them with support to be able to become self sufficient again, and child sponsorship has ensured that children can continue to go to school and receive an education.
